As PSHS Batch II (Class '70), you have lived a little longer and are looking at the world more wisely. Now you must know that riches, pleasures and luxuries, glory, prestige, honor and social glamour cannot confer full happiness because they have a strange way of corrupting man.
Happiness is something more than any or all of the above. The sense of accomplishment that comes from doing well on a difficult and necessary task; affiliation with one's neighbors and esteem in their eyes; the passing on of one's values to one's children -- all these are important sources of happiness in the little platoons of career, community and family, respectively.
Giving unselfishly more of ourselves and the best in us to our assigned tasks will certainly accelerate the transformation of our social order from the monolithic structure dominated by the politically privileged and the economic elite inta a gigantic beehive of a sturdy, peaceful, prosperous and happy people -- the grassroots definition of the good society.
